America West Airlines was among the top ten airlines of United States before it merged with Arlington County, Virginia based US Airways Group. American West Airlines had two hub from which it used to operate. One was Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport in Phoenix, Arizona and second was McCarran international airport at Las Vegas, Nevada. America West Airlines provided services to almost 100 destinations in the United States, Canada and Mexico and it is ranked second among the largest low cost airlines of United States. American West Airlines had 140 aircrafts with its only maintenance base in Phoenix.
America West Airlines came into inception on 1st February 1981 and started giving services with three Boeing 737 aircrafts on 1st August 1983. In the early stages of airlines, passengers could buy tickets on board the aircraft. America West Airlines started only with one hub that was Sky Harbor International Airport in Phoenix, Arizona but later with the quick expansion in the aircrafts, it developed its second hub which was McCarran International Airport at Las Vegas, Nevada. America West Airlines started with three aircrafts but the quick expansion brought the number to twenty one aircrafts and twenty three destinations by the end of the second year. An America West Airline was the first airline to come up with the idea of "cross-utilization" and implemented. In this, employees were trained by the airlines in the variety of airlines job.
The phase of expansion did not stop and continued in 1986 where America West Airlines purchased Boeing 757 from the North West Airlines and also acquired number of de Havilland Canada dash 8 aircrafts to provide services to the local from Phoenix and Las Vegas. In 1989, America West Airlines expanded its services to Hawaii and Nagoya, Japan and also expanded its services to many of the Mexican destinations. America West Airlines operated in bankruptcy from 1991 to 1994. For the restructuring purposes, the Hawaii and Nagoya routes were scrapped and with this Boeing 757 were also sold. The number of airline fleet came down to 87 aircrafts. All the dash 8 aircrafts were sold out and the services of local market were contracted to Mesa Airlines.
Finally after strong decision were taken, America West Airlines managed to come out from bankruptcy in 1994. At the end of 2001, America West Airlines received loans from air transportation stabilization board and loan was repaid in the year 2005 by financing the debts from another lender.
